Depends on a lot of variables. On a 2002 Linear w/ 147,000 miles I went for a lower mile engine replacement. JMO but I prefer a used factory assembly vs tear down and re-build on a car I want to keep long term. A really really good, trustworthy shop might come close to a factory assembly but I don't know any of those. Just an opinion.
It did take awhile to find a good motor. Finally found a place in Florida that sold vin certified used motors and rebuilds. Shipped to my door was $3,000 and on inspection I was really really happy with the motors condition. Pulled the old motor and trans as one unit out the top. Added new alt, turbo, belt pulleys, etc, swapped the trans and re-installed. That was a few years and many miles ago.
One of my considerations was how long to keep the car. I now have a car with a low mile used motor hooked to a 5sp auto w/ that has over 2x the miles of the motor on it. The trans will be going before the motor. Hopefully not for many years but at that point I'm not sure the car will be worth the repair or if I'll even want it anymore. Putting a "new" motor/rebuild on the old trans didn't make as much sense to me in this case.
Anyway there are a lot of factors to consider between replace vs. rebuild. And of course whether your doing any of the work. If I had gone rebuild maybe I would have puled the motor myself and taken it to a shop for rebuild to try to lower the labor cost.
