Ideally, the engine in the car is rebuildable. If the block is good, then the rest is relatively economical to rebuild.
I picked up a car that had a bad engine- when I tore it down, the block and pistons were trashed, the bearings spun and bores damaged. There was no way I was going to spend money to remanufacture the block.
For $500, I picked up another engine with a 30 day warranty. There is no way that I would just put something unknown in place, but the warranty did give me the day I needed to tear the engine down and ensure that it was good. If it wasn't, I would have returned it and had them keep trying.
So I did have the block boiled, I checked the new bearings with plastigage and determined not to have the crank turned.
I did have the head done- valves ground too. For the fun of it, I took apart all the lifters and cleaned them too.
Whats going back in is an engine that I know is near to new. I may be 12 to 13 hundred into this with all the new parts, the machine work I had done, and the cost of the engine. - $500 more than I would have liked, but I am doing this for fun.
The other nice thing about having a second engine is all the extra parts- being able to choose which is the better of the two components to use.
There is great information on the web- especially here and platinoffs site- to make this a very doable project.
