Interesting. Merlot is probably my favourite colour on the 9-5's, and I have a red c900 also... that one definitely fades even up here... though we get plenty of sun year round (it's just cold half the time, and I guess the UV level is a lot lower in winter than it would be for you).
Peeling clear-coat? was the car repainted? I have not run into that with the 9-5s or any stock saabs I've owned... but the clear coat from a respray after some body work on one of my cars is driving me crazy. Just like you describe - large regions peel off over time. Not sure how to correct this until it all peels!!
I can see why you like silver in the south - probably a good deal less hot. Don't you find the black interiors bad for that though? I love the parchment exterior colour in 2005. Not too many of those around though.
