The coolant temp sensor is an inexpensive part and an easy DIY. I replaced all of ours when I had a no start condition that resulted from a defective temp sensor. To me, its a PM item. Use only the OE part if you do from a site sponsor. There is a way of testing them but I don't bother if they are over 5 years old. In my humble opinion, they need replacing once or twice over the lifespan of the vehicle. And since its an important engine management input, it's worthy of occasional replacement to keep your system in top tune. That said, it may not fix your problem.
