Interesting reading - thank you. It sparked a few questions.
Given bearing wear, why get a used one to replace the existing one? (unless your rebuild entails getting and pressing in new bearings, and how do you know the right ones to get?).
Back in the 'old days' one could get a rebuild kit. Experiences over the last 15 years on my Jeeps indicate they don't make rebuild kits anymore. The solution is to buy either a new or rebuilt one and just throw it on.
This thread made me think I need to do some PM...my saab alternator has 140K miles on it.
Is the voltage regulator built into the 2004 9-5 alternator? in the jeep, it is built into the PCM, aka engine control unit.
