What year ? I did it on my 99 9-3. I took a really small zip cutter and cut a piece of the plastic cover off and replaced the voltage regulator(only 2 phillips screws) then put the cut piece of the cover back on using the retaining fastner and some quality tape. I had the car in ramps and was able to access the alternator cover from below to cut. It only took about 30 minutes but took some effort to figure out where to cut by taking the cover off an alternator that wasn't mounted.
