Installed a rebuilt unit - shortly started having intermittent problems. Removed the alternator and tried to replace the regulator & brushes - but fortunately noticed a loose/corroded solder joint in the windings. Resoldered it and the alternator happily worked for another 5k miles - then the same problems began. Took out the alternator for the 3rd time and replaced it with brand new aftermarket unit. It's been 3 years ago and no more problems. Conclusion - rebuilt alternators may have problems with loose solder joints.
