I will look at the tailpipe on my MY 2000 later today and see if it’s rusty or black. Last year, I replaced the breather hose from the PCV system and there are a few photos in my gallery. (FIRST time in 22 years.). One important check of the PCV system is just putting a rubber glove over the oil filler neck - it’s easier to do if the beauty cover is off the engine. With a properly functioning PCV system the glove should suck in the opening, not balloon out as there will be vacuum. My breather hose broke when I touched it so until the new part arrived (esaabparts) I glued it together with silicone sealant. I was able to change it out “blind” by feel under the throttle body and lubes the ends with silicone grease so it slipped right in.
If the vacuum line from the throttle body to the oil separator gets blocked, that’s another place to check. The opening in the oil separator is 2 mm and that’s all it has to be, but it can get blocked allowing pressure to build up in the crankcase, causing oil leaks.
