Curiosity got the better of me so I poked around a bit.

My understanding was that manual transmissions only needed the clutch to be fully depressed (and the safety switch depressed) to allow starting. Gear position wont preclude starting, although neutral is recommended to prevent any surprise movement. To confirm I looked up the 2004 9-5 Owners Manual in the Manual section here and on page 150 it talks about starting the car, and makes no mention of gear shifter position, only clutch depression (of course its different for the automatic).

That make me think that there is nothing in the shifter mechanism that is required to engage the starter, and that your success moving the shifter around while the clutch is depressed and key is turned is coincidence.

- Starting simple - how old is the battery and has it been tested? Weak batteries can cause all kinds of electrical gremlins that aren’t always logical. Starting the car uses a lot of power and if battery isn’t fully charge or if the cables are corroded can have an impact.

- Could the replacement clutch switch be faulty or misadjusted?

- How’s the starter relay? Perhaps getting wonky and actuating intermittently?

.Others can opine on the ignition switch possibility and how to determine if thats an issue, but I’d really start with battery.
