Thanks for the additional comment, and sorry for slow reply: Since my original post life has gotten in the way--in a good way--but has delayed tending to the problem. Anyway, when contact is made moving shift lever and/or key lock barrel, the starter sounds strong and cranks the engine effortlessly, so bad starter is unlikely but possible. The starter relay holds most promise. I just ordered two Bosch 8533176s from eEuro...
