Like Snowmobile and Bernie says, it could very well be the ABS module deciding to give up, especially if you have had some indications of warning lights earlier when hot.

My 04 ABS module died again recently, going a long slow death with more and more dropping dead speedometer.
The X-mas tree lighting doesn't seem to be as big as for the 01 and older so you might only have an ABS light on.

For me, it was kind of fun to follow the progression, bing said the SID, ABS light comes on, cruise kicks off and 10 sec later the speedo dropped dead, time after time, same scenario.
When car was cold in the morning, everything was working again and in the afternoon, it was dead.

Yes, the 701 module is harder to find and more expensive but I have used the 514 in many 04 (2 in my own) but it is NOT 100% success, so choose what you feel you can loose.
