Do you currently have Christmas tree lights as well as a dead speedometer? Where this happened at the same time as other dash work, I would suspect harness or connector issues. Worth a try to use some electrical spray cleaner on various connectors.
If it is the module (and module failure often starts with random short lived Christmas tree light incidents that go away on restart), while it may be hard to find a good module for the 03/04, the older ones will at least give you back speedometer operation. Search the archives for the 2 Bosch part numbers that are compatible with 04. I have not had much luck getting units with the older of the 2 (514) to work fully but others have so it may be the units that I got from the junkyard are also bad (they were at least cheap!). You need a tech 2 for this, I had my Saab Indy do that part. But fwiw, they managed to get an even older unit to work with the speedometer and I just threshold brake in that car, no TCS etc. no big deal for me while I am looking for a good used module...
