So, I will add my experience of the last 48 hours. Leading up to now, I had started to notice and occasional slow crank, then normal when starting. Didn’t think much of it, bit planned to test battery given its age. Car started fine a couple times the other day, and then it didn’t. All lights etc were fine. Battery tested fine, jump start did nothing. Not a peep of noise from starter (no clicking or half-crank, nada).

Turned out the starter motor itself just gave up. Now, cranks immediately upon key turn, spins fast, fires and starts in a second.

So, could it be worth a look at the starter itself?
