The leak is oil based upon the color on a towel. The transmission fluid does not smell burnt, but possibly that could be subtle.

TCM was used and all OBD2 transmission codes went away after the swap without doing anything. I cleared the codes anyway to be sure as there was a P0116 code. That didn't come back after being cleared.

Other forums indicate resetting the TCM adaptation tables is not mandatory. The TCM is always adapting and will adapt with time. The car could move briefly and again when cold so it can find the gears it needs for a short period of time. The TCM is from an 08 car so it should have close to the latest software.

I don't have a Tech2. The car would have to be towed to an indy who is not close and won't want it sitting there if he can't fix it quickly as he is space constrained. The car is probably not worth a tranny swap. From what I read elsewhere the transmission is not in limp home mode without a gear icon. Even in limp home mode, R, 2nd, and 5th should work where 2nd is accessible with the gear selector in low. When it won't move, no gears work. When it will move, all gears seem to work.

This thread suggests that the 4 speed can experience the a similar problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/saab/comments/hogsez/99_95_auto_transmission_issues_moves_then_stops/ It seems whatever the problem might be is not 5 speed specific.

The battery was recently replaced. Perhaps it is somehow the culprit.
