Amen to that.
Leaks on a systems that old can be as simple as an o-ring or two somewhere to a pin-hole in the evaporator or leaky hoses (or as suggested a compressor gone bad).
A reputable shop evacuating the system, testing how well it holds a vaccuum and refilling with the proper amount of refrigerant (825 or 875g depending on label under hood) with dye should quickly identify where any leak is and what it may take to address.
In my case (2003 9-5 V6, 339,500 miles) my Indy and I agreed that a $185 a/c recharge service every 18 months or two years to keep up with a pin-hole leak in the evaporator is more cost effective than replacing the evaporator and whatever brittle plastic breaks in the process. This strategy has dome well in the last 5 years or more.
Thankfully was blowing good and cold today which bodes well for last year’s charge holding up through this year.
