For four consecutive years at the start of every summer I'd take my '03 9-5 in for weak A/C performance. For four consecutive years it passed the vacuum/dye/leak detection test with a good SAAB shop I trust. No clear source of the leak was found. The compressor was suspected but never confirmed. They'd evacuate 0.3-0.6lb of R-134 and pump another 1.8lb in. I'd pay another $100-150, get through another summer, then do the whole thing all over again the next year. Rationale was that $100-150/year to recharge was better than an uncertain wild goose chase for a mystery leak.
In year five I had the car at another shop for a handful of items. They evacuated the system, did the usual tests, and again found no obvious culprit. However, based on their experience and since the water pump happened to be out anyway to facilitate access, they R&Red:
- Both schrader valves (4542353 & 4367991)
- O-rings at A/C compressor pipe , pipe connection behind right headlight, and receiver/dryer (4757084, 4542346, 4756110, 3537503, 4757092, & 4869186)
It was about $100 of parts. Hard to separate out the labor since they were doing several other jobs for me at the same time.
Several years later, the A/C still blows cold (knock on wood).
Was I better off repeatedly recharging than replacing a compressor that was evidently fine (knock on more wood)? Probably. But the better answer was to replace those valves/rings.
Good luck!
