We have a 2000 A4 (2.8 V6 Tiptronic auto) and a 2001 9-5 SE (3.0 V6 Auto Trans). Can't comment on the Acura or BMW, but can tell you these opinions:

You should really consdier an Audi S4 (2.7T) instead of A4 for comparison with an Aero.

For cornering, the 9-5 is very good, but the A4 is better. Yes, the Aero handles slightly better than my SE, but not as good as an A4.

For acceleration and speed, any 9-5 will beat an A4. The A4 is a weak accelerator. (An S4 is more in league with the Aero in this respect.)

The 9-5 offers a much more comfortable ride. Long rides are much nicer in the 9-5. The 9-5 also has real adult sized back seats. If you're over six feet tall, don't even think of trying to climb into the back seat of an A4.

The A4 is great in the snow (if you put snow tires on it). So is the 9-5 (if you put snow tires on it.)

Audi 24 hour road assistance is great. The only unhappy aspect of this is that I actually needed road assistance on a car with less than 5,000 miles on the odometer. Audi had it on a flatbed in less than an hour, and fixed the very next day. I haven't had any need to test SAAB ( or ONSTAR) road assistance.

Audi's comprehensive maintenance program is also wonderful. All service and parts free, even wear-out items, up to 50,000 miles. This proved useful when I needed new rotors at 15,000 miles. (Hmm..that also makes you wonder.) Nothing has yet worn out in my 9-5.

The BOSE audio system in the Audi is far superior to the HK system in the 9-5.

All in all, both cars are great cars. Which one would I pick if I could only have one? Probably the 9-5, but would first check out an S4!
