One thing to consider is the long term dealer experience.
I have had two BMW's in the past and a close friend just bought an M3. I found my dealer service experience to be unacceptable. They charged for parts I didn't need, failed to replace parts I did need and once tried to charge me $1,000 for a new computer board when all I needed was a reset (done by another dealer for free). My friend with the brand new M3 recently had a problem where the dealer wouldn't work on the car because it wasn't purchased there (they delayed for days, holding the car, and then scheduled the work weeks away). In the end his original dealer had to come and tow the car back and do the work! These are northern New Jersey dealers. Surely the worst of the lot.
The BMW is surely a fine car. I definitely enjoyed driving it. However, the price, service cost, and service hassel results in my not even considering BMWs when it's time for a new car.
I have driven a wide variety of automabiles (mostly belonging to others) including Alfa Romeo, Porsche (911s), BMW (32x, 528), Audi (TT, A4), Mercedes (320), Jaguar (xj6) and Saab (900, 9-5).
The Saab 9-5, in my opinion, is a fine auotmobile. Not as fine as, say, a BMW 528 V6 with a stick, or a 911, but clearly better than the Audi TT, and heads and tails above the A4.
Given that the Saab 9-5 is a four door, with plenty of trunk space, room for passengers, plenty of performance and handling, and gets 30 mpg on the highway, I just couldn't be happier.
Really, a fine car.
Cheers,
Dave
