As you said, the demographics are similar. Subaru took over the lower end of the "individualist" (I won't use the Quir... word) market in the U.S. when Saab dropped the 96.
The immediate effect and benefit would be for the Saab dealers who would have more product variety to sell. Honda did the exact same thing with the Passport (thinly rebadged Isuzu Rodeo) so this is not a new strategy.
Once Saab has time to put its touches on it we would probably see more product differentiation. I personally find the concept of reworked Subarus more interesting that reworked Opels.
Another way of thinking of it: This could be the real successor to the Saab 750GT :-)
