I think the best advantage of AWD occurs when starting on a slippery hill, due to snow or rain. It'a bear to get my Viggen started sometimes. Once I'm traveling, I can generally go wherever I wish. With FWD, I find myself modulating the throttle a bit more to get traction than with AWD (which isn't a bad thing sometimes -- it's easy to trick yourself into going too fast with AWD and not being able to stop). It's also nice to have four wheels plowing through a turn -- it tends to be easier to get out of a spin. Now, would I buy a car solely because it has awd? Probably not (I chose Saab over Audi, for instance). But if the same car had an awd option, I would always get the awd option.
