With manual = 20 city, 30 hway
auto = 19 city, 28 highway (you could get 33+)
Of course your mileage will vary, but their testing methods compare apples to apples. I don't have any trouble getting 35 mpg on the highway with my LPT but I don't drive like you. That 2 mpg is not trivial.

I could complain about all the people in my neighborhood that run stop signs because they have automatics. Manuals are best/easiest shifted into 1st near a dead stop - helps save the synchros!
In the future we will all be driving a/ts because they will perform better than m/ts - but that hasn't happened yet.
