The sport mode on the AT gives the impression of initial rapid response- but it's deceptive. At the Aero Academy I fly-swatted the gas from a full stop thru 2nd gear (for the lane change drill) in both regular & sport modes- both give the same kinda mellow acceleration. The sport mode "feels" faster on the street back home. In truely aggressive driving the paddles were sometimes slow to react, sometimes lost on the wheel & auto downshifted at the wrong time. The usual instructor advice was to "leave it in auto."
The manual can be faster from stop but it takes a little "abuse" to do it. After 2nd gear the the manual tranny car is significantly stronger because of a) a lower over-all gear ratio compared to the AT & b) the transient overboost allowed with the MT (wonderful!).
If you really like driving, get the MT.
