I live in central/northern NJ, on the highest part of South Mountain. Not very high (about 600 - 700 feet) -- but considering that the village is at about 50 feet -- and its about 3/4 mile to there -- the roads are very steep here.
In the worst snowy and icy weather, the ESP on my '02 Linear wagon has pulled me through the main streets just fine. (and boy, at the steepest parts the system is sometimes cycling and working like crazy)
But NOT my driveway. My drive is much shorter, but perhaps steeper than yours. Even with a couple of inches of snow, I can barely make it in beyond the curb. (then its time to break out the snow blower).
I'm certainly not getting rid of the Saab for these few bad snow days, but also would only consider AWD for the next car -- IF I stay in the house that long! (and the Saab is the only car in the household -- if I had another vehicle that was AWD, I'd be driving that on the worst weather days)
(BTW -- I have the Saab snow wheels with Gislavids on all 4 wheels)
My neighbor parks his 2 year old 5 series for the winter, bought himself a used Range Rover last year. He makes it up his drive just fine with that!
Good luck --
Pete
