My dad has an 86 9000 Turbo and I have an 86 900 Turbo, so I can speak somewhat to the differences. The 9000 is a much more modern, refined car. Quieter, smoother, more creature comforts. The 5-speed shifts much nicer than my 900, it's roomier and seems every bit as quick. He has about 160K on his and it is a strong runner still. That said, it is also more complex, meaning more to go wrong with it. Dad has had to put much more work into his 9000 than I have had to with my 900. Mostly electrical stuff - fuel pumps, window lifts, antenna and more. Of course, his is the first year for the 9000 and so it suffers like most first year models from not having all the bugs worked out of it. I would ask this question on the 9000 board if you haven't already to get more input.
Personally, I would never buy a 900 with an automatic. Never owned or driven one, but everything I've read about them is negative.
Finally, get a Saab mechanic to check out which ever one you choose, just to make sure you don't get any nasty and expensive surprises shortly after purchase. Good luck, Geoff.
Cheers,
Dan
