From talking to professional several mechanics, its better for them, and to a slightly lesser extent, the customer, to charge enough to replace all parts near the suspect problem so you don't have to come back. Cars are so complicated these days that one system is tightly integrated into another, so it may make sense to replace related parts. Not all mechanics are villans just because the prices shock you.
I'm not a professional mechanic; I just notice that the various DIY projects work out to "doing everything in the area as long as you are in there" catagory. Ease up, shop around, or you try it yourself. Self reliance is rewarding and sometimes cheaper - its also sometimes an expensive education when you have to do it over to correct an error. If someone else is educated as a profession, why should they give it away?
