Thanks so much for this info - it was INVALUABLE to me today. Not only did it give me peace of mind, it gave me a serious leg to stand on. It was really cool of you to take the time to look up the info, and I'm very grateful.

I got in to the shop today before the owner and looked at the parts list on the job and then called a dealer in the area to get a comparison. He charged me less than the dealer, though the dealer's price on the clutch kit is twice what I listed from eEuroParts ($380.00!!!).

So, when the guy came in I told him Look, you said you do 2-3 clutches a week and you said it would be 600, 650 if I wanted the rear seal done (which I did). If you had called me about the price increase I could have had advance notice and told you not to do it, but you went ahead and did it anyway. That's not right and the FLA statutes agree with me. You convinced me you knew what you were talking about by saying you did 2-3 per week - I had no reason to doubt that your estimate was accurate.

He wasn't in the mood for a fight first thing in the morning I guess, so he said OK, $750.00. I said Dude, I see you're trying to work with me here. 725.00. He said OK. In hindsight I probably should have held him to the 650.00, but the law says a variance of 10% is allowed, so I let it go. Why spend 80% of the effort for that last 10% gain?

I have learned my lesson, for sure! WRITTEN ESTIMATES from now on!!

PS: The new clutch drives like butter!! He left the reservoir below min, though, so I'll be back to him for that.
