If you have trouble compressing the PP enough to get your copper or steel wire inserted under the fingers, say because the slave cylinder doesn't push it far enough in, remember, you can look at the problem from the other end.
With great care, the PP can be separated from the flywheel, using a big ol' screwdriver as a crowbar and held there by placing some large nuts underneath it. Keep the nut-as-spacer captive by putting them over the PP alignment studs on the flywheel. Then turn the engine 1/3 revolution and repeat.
With some big old fat nuts, (maybe even wheel lug nuts?), you can lift the PP some half inch or more from the flywheel.
Use care so you don't drop them inside the bell housing. And watch out for pinched fingers. But it works.
