Yes, we swapped everything except lights, fuel pump & fuel sending unit.
87 to 89, most things fit/bolted right on. One issue was size & location of screws for grounds....I had to drill out some of the 87 circular ends to get them to fit the bolts in the 89 (they went larger on all). FWIW I found out the best way to do this is NOT drill them out (twisted), but instead to split the end of the circle with large wire cutters and make a split ring type connector...they hold fine.
My lighting was comparable, but your headlights are not. What to do here I don't know, as all my cars used the new style headlights.
Yes I put the 87 dash in the 89. IIRC, they were not the same..connections on the back for tach, etc. were different. We wanted the indash Turbo gage, plus it didn't match the old.
Retained the 89 heater/blower. There was differences in the vacuum hoses and a shutoff valve to prevent boost from reaching the sytem. I brought the old one from the 87 into the 89 because of wiring locations.
It is a serious job, but doable if you are patient! Good luck.
