The original 5spd in the c900 dates back to mid 70's (or earlier). Design is not inherently poor, but rather more in the time when an 8v turbo w/ 135HP was a screamer. Some improvements were made in the 89 model year which increase longevity. That's really the only weak point to a c900, although the newest car you'll be able to find (a '94 comm. ed. convertible) will still be 10 years old. I know it isn't what you initially asked, but I'd suggest you go instead with a mid 90's 9000. The design is more modern (and thus safer, and that not just in theory, check Folksham insurance ratings). The 9000 is also more powerful and can haul more - also 6" shorter than the c900.
Whatever you choose, the mechaniocal condition requires thorough investigation. Paying a mechanic to look the car over will be well worth the $75 it will cost.
