I really love the classic 900s and own a '93 turbo convertible and an 84 turbo sedan--both automatics. And I owned an '88 convertible as an every day driver, including Michigan winters--about ten years ago. But I can't whole heartedly recommend a classic 900 as a commuter car, especially a convertible. Maybe a good question would be how far you drive, will it be your only car, and do you have a garage? For what you'd spend on a really nice 93-94 convertible you could probably get a 96 9000 which would be a much nicer all around car. The newer style convertible would also be better as everyday car but are a little more money.Don't get me wrong, classic 900s will go 400,000miles if properly cared for, they just aren't a drive it and forget it kind of car.
