I think you are better off finding a good clean well cared for model then looking for a certain year. That being said I would go with a 1988 or newer & one will a well documented history. The 88's have the newer brakes however a weaker trans when compared with the 89+ versions, however the odds would be in your favor that the trans would of already been replaced with possibly the upgraded pinion.
Headgasket, timing chain, power steering rack & rust in a few areas are the other bad spots
Unfortunantly the older saabs are more maintenance oriented & I would be prepared to fix a few of these areas over the years
