Damn that sucks. I thought I had it rough: My car is "resting" in a friend's barn in the next town over, 12 miles away that I often have to hitch, but I've never had to go a week without getting something done on it.
As for 2 previous timing chains(on Saab 900s?), I'll believe you if you tell me more about these colored links and where their use is documented for C900s. I honestly have never heard of that and want to know if there was an embarrassingly easier way to set up my timing than the 2 hours I spent eyeballing it (altho after replacing valve spring keepers it felt like SUCH a cakewalk). Now I wish I still had my valve cover off so I could see if those sprocket marks point to a tooth or a valley between. I wonder if there's an index mark somewhere on the crank sprocket too.
In any case, I don't remember getting much "snap" out of mine, except when I tried to turn the crank without putting the little spring back into the tensioner. Without that the chain can definitely hop teeth.
Did you notice after turning the crank and finding your marks off if they seemed a whole tooth out of time? If they were clearly advanced or retarded then you should be able to compensate accordingly next time you set them up. And never mind the 15 degrees: Take your best shot at setting the chain on the sprockets, release the tensioner by adding the little bolt, and turn the crank thru at least 2 full revolutions (more can't hurt). Just make sure you stop again when the flywheel is at 0 degrees and see what your sprocket marks look like *then*. If they still seem off, imagine what they'd look like moved a whole tooth over: If that seems better, remove the tensioner and do it and if not then leave it alone. On my motor removing the tensioner completely allowed just enough slack to sort of "inchworm" the chain over the sprockets in either direction, one tooth at a time. You may just have to play with it like that and try all the different adjustments until you're sure that one looks better than all the others.
And don't give up on the Townsend Site. That one always fades in and out of availability.
