I guess it's almost impossible to predict when something is going to go wrong and how much it will cost for any given amount of time. I've had my 89 900s for 5+ years now. The car looked almost new (still does) when I purchased it (186k, $2,400). My friends thought I was crazy to buy a high mileage Saab. There aren't many options these days though when you're talking about a c900.
Doing some quick math-I've spent $1500 or so in repairs over 5 years. Some of it at the local indy shop-some of it at home. The Saab guy told me from the start to drive it easy and keep the fluids changed. I've done just that. Engine oil every 3k, tranny oil once a year, coolant every 2 years, don't slam the gears often etc. The other thing I've found also-is to fix any problem that comes up as soon as possible. They seem to have a way of multiplying and feeding on each other if you don't. (Superstitous?)
Maybe there is an element of luck involved too, I'm not sure. I've known people who have spent twice as much as myself for a 900 and they've turned out to be real money pits. Definetly not the car to own if you just like to drive it and forget it.
Hope this helps you a bit, and I hope too that you find a nice one for yourself. I think they're really great.....
Jerry
