Dan,
I have kept excel spreadsheets showing how much we average in spending, for all the family's cars, just because I was curious what it would be, and wanted a handy list of all repairs. I've averaged about $35-40/mo on my daily driver 88 n/a 900. that includes all work, too: even new tires, new stereo, and practically no diy. I think that's pretty cheap, actually.
of course that average stretches out over a fairly long period that included a new transmission, and there are some dents and trim I'd still like to fix. it's been very reliable lately, so the average has leveled out over the last few years, like I crossed over some 90,000mi maintenance hump.
of course a lot depends on the previous owner, but be sure and take it to a saab shop if you don't diy. mechanics that don't know saabs have made some pretty basic mistakes on mine that cost me later.
