I like my '88 900S, although it isn't without problems. These are the kind of cars that will have persisting problems that you can't quite figure out (or don't want to waste the time solving). For example at present My heater valve leaks intermittantly. It isn't a serious problem - more annoying than anything else.
In addition I have shocks and tie rod ends in the garage that I've been meaning to replace now for 6 months - I'll get to it eventually, but I'm slow, and the car doesn't really suffer for the lack of cosmetic maintainence.
In owning this car (purchased w/ 102K, now has 106K miles) I've replaced the headgasket, transmission, waterpump, ball-joints, waterpump, and all parts of the hydraulic clutch. Doing all this major work generally exempts you from mechanical failures for a little while... but there's always more to do.
When properly sorted out, they're really nice cars that can haul an amazing amount of cargo. They also handle well and are statistically safer than the newest ('04) VW Jetta/Golf.
You'll go broke taking the car to a mechanic though. If you find one you like, take it to a reputibale Saab (not general "European" but specifically Saab) Mechanic and pay then $100 to tell you everything that needs to be fixed. Then, if you end up buying the car, buy a Bentley manual and read it.
Locally, there's are not many 900's to be found without some rust. I'm partial to 9k's for this reason - they don't seem to rust out so quickly.
good luck.
