Considering the sudden change in performance after you got the new battery, I'd suspect that your charging system isn't working properly.
It's easily possible that the ground wire between the alternator case and the engine block is frayed and/or the brushes on the voltage regulator are worn down pretty close to their service limit - both of those limit the amount of current that can be pushed back into the battery by the alternator. Not to mention that the ground point from the engine block to the body might need cleaning.
