Wheel bearing, CV, or inner driver? Posted by JohnT [Email] (#1654) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JohnT) on Fri, 20 Jan 2006 16:38:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hope someone can help me figure this out. I thought I had a worn out front wheel bearing but after reading some old posts I'm not so sure...
When I accelerate while turning right there is a pronounced vibration and noise from the left front. It makes a kind of whirring/roaring noise at lower speeds, especially while turning right, but isn't as noticeable at higher speeds. If I weave back and forth at speed, the noise is definitely louder when turning right and goes away when turning left.
So I bought a wheel bearing and removed the left wheel and steering knuckle. I found that the outer CV boot is torn, though not too badly. I don't get the click-click-click while turning that I would expect from a bad CV joint so I get the feeling this may not be the main problem.
Then I read an old post here that said the inner driver could cause the type of vibration I am feeling under acceleration.
I recently replaced both rear motor mounts, all ball joints and got new tires with different wheels (I believe they are balanced ok and wheels are straight).
So here's my question: Is my vibration and noise from the bearing, the CV, the inner driver, or something else? Any guesses greatly appreciated!
The car is a 1984 900T w/ auto tranny.
