Harold I think you could be right about the motor mounts/wear pattern because the vibration started right after I changed the mounts. Maybe I should put the old mounts back in... (just kidding).
CMyles, the stethoscope thing sounds like a good idea. Is there a way to do that while driving the car? I don't have one but could get one.
I have a spare set of axles from a '79 900 that I believe are good. If I clean them up and check them out, maybe using them would be a good way to eliminate some possibilities. And the boots are good. Might at least buy me some time.
What CMyles said about the CV makes sense and the torn boot definitely makes it suspect, but wouldn't it make the "clacking" noise at low speed hard turns? It doesn't do that at all.
