John T, I don't know of a realistic way to listen to that stuff with a stethoscope while driving. We used to just raise the car on a lift and roll the tire by hand while holding the stethoscope on/near the bearing in the knuckle. When the axle(s) is out just jam a finger into the companion flange (inner driver) through all the grease and feel the 'walls' of the journals where the tripod bearing fits. Large depressions in those 'walls' mean it's time to put in a new comp. flange or swap left for right. That's an old trick that makes the symptom evident in reverse instead of forward and most people didn't mind that. Don't pull out both companion flanges at the same time. That makes it harder to reinstall them. Keep track of all shims and replace them on the side of the transmission case where they originate. Cheers.
