Wow, thanks for all the input guys. Soneway, the car has fairly low mileage, around 120k I think, but not sure because the odo was not working properly when I got the car 2 years ago. It seems in very good condition for its age. I think it was garaged a lot. Didn't even have any dashboard cracks! (It's getting a few now).
I will definitely replace all the boots, but new axles sound like a good option and would eliminate the CV possibility. I already have the wheel bearing and the knuckle is off so I'll go ahead and do that too. It makes sense to at least check the inner drivers while the axle is out. Then if all that doesn't cure the problem I'll think about going back in later and replace the inner drivers. That looks like kind of a big job that I don't want to get into this week.
Looks like eEuroparts doesn't list complete axles for the '84 but I found some at Drivewire.com for about the same price. They don't seem to be asking for core returns though.
