Most head-units can operate with 4-8 ohm load (less than 4 ohm - you'll burn the amplifier, more than 8 ohm - less sound pressure). If you connect speakers in parallel the total impedance will be R=(R1xR2)/R1+R2 (if R1=R2=R than total Rtot will be R/2). If you connect'em in series Rtot=R1+R2.
As for sound - the more load the more damping factor (uhh... soft bass; nice for jazz and so on).
If you operate with extarnal amplifier refer to its manual concerning load requirements.
