Since we got our car for free (car had a paperwork problem that prevented it from being registered and thus, in California, disposed of), we had basically $500 to spend on parts to make it reliable. Our car ran mostly new hoses, new coolant bottle cap, new thermostat, new fan thermoswitch, and a new water pump. The only thing we reused was the radiator. We ran very cool through most of the race, but by the end of our run we were running warm. It's possible it was the result of impending engine failure, but I believe it's more likely it was due to a small leak in the radiator reducing cooling system pressure and thus efficiency.
I have no idea what to expect this year, as it's looking increasingly unlikely we'll be able to find a free, essentially running Saab. Our repair budget will surely be impacted - hopefully not too much.
Keep in mind there's a water-only rule, so no coolant and no water wetter (etc.) to help improve cooling system efficiency. That's what you're working with...
And, seriously, make note of Damien's point about the air filter - we seriously failed there. This year, it's as many lightly-used stock filters as we can find. :)
