I'm not sure it's insane. It's about what I want out of life. $20,000 for an excellent Saab 900, that was refurbished (not necessarily rebult), would be worth a lot to me. It sure beats 20 grand for a Honda (nice cars but everywhere). If it were a truly "like-new" special 900 with the probablity of mechanical failure low (or a warrenty) then I would pay a lot of money, yes maybe even $30 large. Why not? My friends spend $5000 a year on travel, what do they get out if that? A bunch a photos. In 4 years of travel I could have a cool car that I really want to drive. So what if it is only worth $7000 after I drive it for a year, or even $5000. I "only" lose $15,000. Every time I have to sell my wife's car for a new one it has lost $20000 in value (about half).
There may be a fine line between passion and insanity, but I still believe I am on the side of passion. Perhaps I am one of the few who really think there is no contemporary 21st century car at even twice the $20,000 figure.
