Wow . . . there's clearly a lot of anti-AIC sentiment out there! Who knew? My experience is clearly a bit different. I maintain 6 classic saabs and i've got to say that the AIC is usually the least of my problems. A quick cleaning is all they have ever needed- i have never had to replace one yet.
There actually was an instance in which i was sure the AIC was to blame for a terribly erratic idle. The problem went on for month. Eventually I gave up and replaced the AIC with a manually operated valve (from the plumbing store). This certainly solved the problem but trying to explain to my girlfriend that if she borrowed my car she would have to make under-hood adjustments when the car was hot or cold didn't really fly. In the end the ECU turned out to be the culprit not the AIC.
I certainly would never buy a new one as they are stupidly expensive new. Luckily i always see plenty at the wreckers. If you can't find a SAAB late 80's volvo 740s (and the like) use exactly the same unit. You shouldn't end up paying more than about $15 for one.
