You know, Saabnutt, I had one of those crank VWs.

The first car I drove was my dad's '58 VW van with crew cab and pickup bed rear.
Someone had probably changed the engines a few times, it had a 36 horse in it, and that blew so we changed motors (I think to another 36 horse).
The one that came out had a funny-topped nut on the crank pulley, the standard hex but with two spiral-y prongs on it, and there was a swivel-aside cover opposite it on the motor tin, and a black-painted crank in with the jack and tool kit. But to use it we would have had to cut a hole in the rear panel, and a notch in the bumper.
I kick myself that I didn't set aside that crank, nut and rear tin. The option could have saved my neck a few times on a later VW, when the battery was too run down to spin the starter.
