I just got done doing the same treatment to my '89 SPG. It also started out as wet carpet, wet foam padding and then surface rust. The insulation in the plastic bag was soaked and disintegrated. After rust removal and floor repair I replaced the plastic bag/insulation with some heat barrier material I got from Summit racing. Thermo tech cool it insulation mat. It is fiberglass sandwiched between two layers of heat resistant mylar. I cut a piece the size of the original bad and taped the edges closed with heavy duty black duct tape. I cut out a rectangle for the clip on the center tunnel that holds the wiring harness. I've attached pics through photo bucket. Let me know if they do not come out.
