Actually, my carpets were bone-dry. I just pulled them out to clean them (and possibly dye them). I didn't know what I'd find underneath, and was surprised to find the foam pads there. They too appeared to be dry. It wasn't until I lifted the pads that I realized I had a fair bit of water trapped beneath them. The water seems to have come from a thoroughly clogged fresh air intake. I cleaned out the air intake, and I peeled away much of the undercoating from my floorboards so I can sand away every little bit of rust. When it's all shiny, I'll use some rust-proofing and then re-apply the undercoating. Before I replace the carpet, I'd like to make sure I don't have another OTHER sources of moisture besides the air intake. I'm not sure what other things drain to the floorboards. What a terrible design, by the way!!! Why would they design the car to have drainage channels going directly to the floorboads where they can't be accessed without ripping apart the car?
Thanks for the tips about replacing the white blanket. I guess I still have a couple of things I'm wondering about:
- What kind of undercoating should I use? I believe they come in spray cans and also in a big liquid jug that you just pour on and spread around? Which is more appropriate?
- What should I do with all the little drain plugs on the floorboards? Should I leave these plugged? Should I seal them with undercoating?
Thanks,
- Mike
