I respect whitesaab, he has a lot of experience with Saabs, but I disagree about value. As background: I have been restoring a 1990 SPG since '06, and I have a mint all-original MC yellow 91 SE with 30k miles that I have owned since 1996. The '91 SE had a appraised value of $7,500 about 8 years ago (that was the low point), and has appreciated to mid teens appraised (now insured with agree value for $20+). The SPG has been restored to close to factory, but with some changes (16" aeros, modded engine, door inserts with a pretty felt-like black, dash recovered by a west coast shop that looks very close- but is not exactly factory, close to-but-not-quite-stock-color headliner). Both cars win awards at Saab shows.
I agree with whitesaab in that these cars are not likely ever to be pebble beach queens, and therefore meticulous detail to original is not needed. Just keep it close to factory and people will love it (and pay more if you sell). I have heard rumblings from others about wild departures from factory-like colors and prints (leapord patterned door inserts did not go over well). Short of that have fun.
Saab fanatics want original looking, but not necessarily exact original materials. 99% cannot recall if the door inserts are grey, black-grey or black. Even the concours judge was not sure about all of the exact trim colors (this was for the 91 SE). A tastefully redone door insert will be worth more than a shabby (or OK but worn) original. Maybe not thousands, but 10s or even a few hundred dollars more.
