Trying to prepare myself...
1991 900TC auto trans. Symptoms: Occasional stall. Sometimes when I'm at a stop light, foot on the brake, the cooling fan starts up, and the car stalls. My antilock light is on all the time, but it doesn't glow solid; it flickers. When the car is acting up (sometimes it runs fine - no issues), while driving, if I hit the brakes the ABS light goes out for a second and comes back on.
When the car does stall, it acts as though the battery is dead (no warning lights, car won't turn over). What I do to get it started again is get out, lift the hood, jiggle or move the battery, and it starts right back up. Seriously.
I brought it in to replace the voltage regulator (yeah, I know); indy says the VR is not the problem, as the brushes were only worn about halfway down. There were grooves worn into the commutator, so he recommends new or remaned alternator.
He hasn't fixed that yet, but he says my harmonic balancer also should be replaced. I get no squeals on startup.
Anyway, he says he has a list of things the car needs, so I'm waiting to hear back once he gets the numbers together. My prediction: the number will be high.
Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts on his "diagnosis" of the stalling problem, and aside from squealing, what are some other symptoms of a misbehaving harmonic balancer?
