not quite sure about a few of those points?
Your '98 SE was essentially a 9-3, with a 2.0T in it...
does a 2.3L or V6 get as good mpg as a 2.0L c900 (with stick)?
I'm not sure that a ng900 really was safer than a c900... the 9-3 made a bunch of big structural improvements (starting in late 1998 I think?), but iirc, the folksam numbers for ng900 were worse than c900, at least at one point. I could be wrong though... the crash tests weren't pretty either... that is not to say that ng900 wasn't safe though... lots of cars with better crash results wouldn't survive a moose...
and "drives better", well, a 2.0T ng900 is fast, and probably smoother (I forget, it's not a priority for me), but I was surprised just how much worse cornering was vs a base model c900... I was test driving 9-3's (to buy) and every time I got back in the 1993, I was amazed how much tighter it felt... made me smile... demonstrated to a passenger on a test drive once + got full agreement... get up to maybe 30-40 mph + do a fast S turn: the c900 tracks precisely with a bit of roll, the 9-3 is way more sloppy... of course this is all relative... a few weeks later I got to drive a brand new Subaru Forester halfway across the country and it's handling was truly atrocious compared to the 9-3, let alone the c900s ;-)...
